Abolition Opposed In State

THE EMANCIPATION QUESTION

The responses of the minority and majority members from the Border Slave States to the paper addressed them by the President of the United States on the subject of gradual emancipation in their respective states have been published in the city papers.

The majority response is signed by twenty members, including Messrs. Thomas Calvert, Crisfield, Leary and Webster of this state, and is not favorable to the President’s plan, while that of the minority, signed by seven members, finds no fault with his plan and urges its serious consideration upon the people of the Border Slave States.

Congress, however, failed to pass the bill appropriating two hundred million dollars in aid of the scheme, as recommended by Mr. Lincoln and the Border States, therefore, have no assurance that such aid will be extended to them.

If it had been given, we have no doubt emancipation could have been carried in Maryland.
