Carter Edward Banks Sr., 80, of 444 Pine Ave., Cumberland, passed away Monday, March 20, 2000, at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Born Aug. 17, 1919, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Robert David Banks and the late Gertrude (Carter) Banks. He also was preceded in death by two brothers; and one sister. Mr. Banks retired from the CSX (Chessie) System and had worked for both the B & O and Western Maryland Railroads. He was a member of the McKendree United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mayola (Page) Banks; three sons, Carter E. Banks Jr. and wife Mary, Bronx, N.Y., Clinton E. Banks, Cumberland, and Corvin E. Banks and wife Kathleen, Mount Airy; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Maurice Banks and wife Shirley, Inglewood, Calif.; two sisters, Alberta Deviner, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Margie Hodges, Pittsburgh; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gary Curtis officiating. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
