Carver High 1954

When Carver High School opened, there were no music, chemistry, or foreign language classes offered. Classes were offered in English, Home Economics, shop, trigonometry, physics, social studies, algebra, and biology. The students were disciplined and worked hard to please the Carver teachers. Parents played a very active role and there was no partaking in alcohol, drugs, or violent behavior. School books and sports uniforms were "hand-me-downs" from the other local high schools.

As one former student, Lonnie Davis, recalls, "We never got anything new, but we always appreciated what we did get...and we did have the best cooks." Davis further recalls, "Our parents made us go to school. They wanted us to be well-educated and saw it as a way out [of our poor living conditions]."

Carver was never closed because of inclement weather, students from nearby West Virginia lived with family or friends, and school was very rarely missed. This photograph depicts the 1954 senior class of Cumberland's Carver High School.
