Carver Prom

On September 28, 1955, the Alcohi Mirror ran an article entitled, 'Twenty Pupils from Carver High Enroll as Integration Begins.' In compliance with the ruling on Brown v. Board of Education, Carver High School was closed, but not completely. The elementary school continued accepting students, and senior high students were given the option of attending an integrated high school or continuing at Carver. Most Carver students decided to attend integrated high schools. Most attended Fort Hill or Allegany, but at least two Carver students attended LaSalle High School after desegregation...

By all accounts, the transition from segregation to integration went smoothly at Allegany High School. Carver students were not left behind academically, and according to Vieda Page, who became a Fort Hill student, 'We were taught everything at Carver that Fort Hill gave me.'
