Carver High School Dance Band, 1954
As recalled by Herman J. Washington, "there were white music teachers who came into our school (Carver) once or twice a week and taught a few of us how to play instruments. A Mr. Malcolm taught us to play the sax and clarinet, and Wilton and Lua Sykes both taught us the violin. Miss Mary Robb, also white, played a big part in the lives of all Carver students because she helped us a great deal as our glee club teacher. I think she was a full time teacher at Carver. I could be wrong about that but I know she played a big part in music at Carver."
Depicted in this 1954 Carver High School Dance Band photograph are from left to right, Herman Washington on Alto Sax, Billy Peck on drums, Arthur Washington on Alto Sax , and Lester Frazier on Tenor Sax.
