COLORED HOUSING PROJECT GETS ROOF

Workmen put finishing touches on the roof, of the front section of the U-shaped colored housings-project on Frederick Street which will house 30 families on completion. At left, another group of workers are shown erecting one of the side sections. The project, located, adjacent to Carver High School, is being constructed by the John Vandergrift Company and will contain 144 rooms including six one-bedroom apartments, 12 two-bedroom apartments and three four-bedroom apartments. It is three stories. The project is one of three planned locally. The first "Jane Frazier Village" in Mapleside contains 125 units and has been in use some time. A third project of approximately 145 units is contemplated.

The "colored housing project" was later named Benjamin Banneker Apartments. The complex was razed in 2007, and a new housing project, named Banneker Gardens, opened on the site in Spring 2011.
