EDITH TAYLOR

CUMBERLAND — Edith Taylor, 111, of Cumberland, passed on to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, June 20, 2005, at the WMHS Sacred Heart Campus Hospital.

Born May 1, 1894, in Moorefield, WVa., she was the daughter of the late Howard Hollingsworth and Bertha (Willis) Hollingsworth. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Taylor, 1948; three daughters, Edith Dean, Virginia Beckward and, Isabelle Greene; and three sons, Earl Taylor, Henry Taylor, and, Howard Taylor. Mrs. Taylor was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

A member of the Metropolitan AME Church, she is survived by three sons, Jacob Taylor and wife Luvernie, Cumberland, Ray Taylor and wife Doris, Cumberland, and Phillip Taylor, Buffalo, N.Y.; three daughters, Dorothy Purchase, Washington, D.C.; Bertha Hurtt, Buffalo, and Mary Jane Twyman, Cumberland; 23 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 75 great-great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Taylor was known as the oldest living resident in the State of Maryland having raised 12 children and nurturing many children making sure that no one left her home hungry. On Saturday, May 1, 2005, she celebrated her 11lth birthday surrounded with the love of her children, grandchildren, and extended family at the Allegany County Nursing Home. Remarkably, Edith was always able to maintain her memory and wit sharing various family and childhood experiences.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, PA., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday, June 23, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, June 24, 2005, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Alfred Deas Jr. officiating. Interment will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Taylor and her family celebrated her 111th birthday on Sunday. "Grandma Edith," as she is affectionately called by family and friends was born May 1,1894, in Moorefield, W.Va., but moved to Cumberland at a early age.
