Elton Louise (Keys) Johnson, 79, of 426 Ridge Street, Keyser, died on Friday, May 26, 2000, at the Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

Born on Oct. 3, 1920, in Keyser, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Ira (Washington) Keys. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack W. Johnson on July 4, 1983; a brother, Clarence E. Keys; a three sisters, Eurith Keys, Blanche A. Campbell and Nitra June Alexander. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker for the late Dr. Robert T. and Mary Evelyn Coffman. She attended Carver High School, Cumberland, and was a graduate of Howard High School, Piedmont.

Elton was a life-long member of Janes United Methodist Church, where she served as a Superintendent of Sunday School, Teacher and Treasurer. At Janes Church, she also served as Communion Steward and Worship Committee Chairperson, was a member of the Board of Trustees and Administrative Council, a member of the choir, Treasurer of United Methodist Women and Key Women for Church Women United, Chairperson of Pastor Parish Relations, a delegate to District Conference, a member of Black Methodist for Church Renewal, worked with youth, and was Director of the Youth Choir. She was a 54-year charter member of Washington-Smith American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #152, where she served as Sergeant of Arms, Chaplain, Historian and secretary for 22 years, a 25-year charter member of Aubrey-Robert Stewart VFW Ladies Auxiliary #5957, a member of the Burlington United Methodist Family Services Auxiliary, a volunteer for Faith in Action and belonged to the Mineral County Senior Citizens. Elton was a faithful for coordinating bereavement dinners to the Tri-Towns' area families for many years.

Surviving are three sisters, Susan E. Mitchell, Keyser, Myra B. Perry of Columbus, Ohio, and Thelma K. Stewart of Keyser; two brothers, Harry O. Keys and wife Teresa and David A. Keys and wife Joretta, both of Columbus, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Anna Dean Johnson and Mary James; brother-in-law, Thomas Johnson and wife Georgianna; and dear loved ones, Nancy Lee Coffman Howard, Newport News, Va., and Barbara Coffman Gellner, St. Marys, W.Va., and their children; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, June 3, 2000, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Samuel E. Starling Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser. A memorial service will be held by the Washington-Smith American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post #152 at the funeral home on Friday at 8 p.m.
