Freida Spriggs, 1946-2023

The following is an excerpt from the Adams Family Funeral Home of Cumberland, Maryland website. It focuses upon her extensive community involvement as well as education and career of Frieda Spriggs, as evidenced by her being honored with a City of Cumberland Star Award:

Cumberland, MD – Freida R. Spriggs, 76, of Cumberland, MD, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2023, at UPMC Western Maryland. Born November 11, 1946, in Cumberland, MD. 

Ms. Spriggs was the daughter of the late Clarence H. Smith, Sr. and Francena L. (Carter) Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband: Raymond L. Spriggs, Sr. who passed away December 31, 2010; her brothers: David and William Smith; and her sister: Francena Smith. 

Freida attended SS. Peter and Paul School and graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1965. Every month, she would set up a date for her classmates to meet for dinner to talk and enjoy each other's company. Freida was a life-long member of Our Lady of the Mountains SS. Peter and Paul Church. She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital, ABL, C & P Telephone Company, SS. Peter and Paul Church as a Secretary, and PharmaCare West where she retired on May 2, 2014. 

Freida loved spending time with her family, working in her garden, going on walks, and enjoying her friends' company. She was a member of Ursuline Associates, K of C Auxiliary, West Side Neighborhood Crime Watch, Queen Mum of the Red Hat Mommas, St. Mary's Martha Group, SS. Peter and Paul Luncheon Group Lunch Box Programs, St. Anthony Place, Money Counter for OLM, St. Paul's Lutheran AAPPS Program, and Vacation Bible School. 

As a breast cancer and lung cancer Survivor, every year she walked in the Relay For Life to help fight breast cancer. Freida received the City Star Award of Cumberland.
