Fulton Myers Drum and Bugle Corps, Baltimore Street, 1946

The Fulton Myers Drum and Bugle Corps is on parade in this June 30, 1946 photograph taken by Middlekamp's Photo Shop, 315 Franklin Street, Cumberland, Maryland. The Corps is depicted marching west on Baltimore Street, just beyond its intersection with Mechanic Street. Members recall that they were always last in the parade so spectators would know when it was over, as confirmed by the flow of vehicular, bus, and pedestrian traffic just behind the Corps in this depiction. Note the Cadillac Cocktail Lounge on the left. As noted elsewhere on this website, the Cadillac Lounge was a popular venue for nationally known African-American musicians to appear while in Cumberland.

The Fulton Myers Post #153 of the American Legion, on Mechanic Street in Cumberland, was named in honor of Private Fulton J. Myers. The post received its temporary charter on August 12, 1942, and its permanent charter on March 16, 1945. William F. Jones served as the first Post Commander, and Otho Simms as the first Adjutant.

The Fulton Myers Post #153 of the American Legion was closed during the summer of 2008. It is unknown at this time if the closure is permanent. The Post has retained its charter, and is currently looking for another possible location.

Update: The Post was damaged by a fire in 2010 and razed in 2011.
