Gretchen Geneva Pope, 85, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at the WMHS Sacred Heart Campus Hospital, Cumberland.

Born March 27, 1917, Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John Franklin Gordon and Rebecca (Jackson) Gordon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Pope; and her son, James Pope; and daughter, Sandra Keys. Mrs. Pope was a retired employee of the former Sheehes Restaurant and was a member of the Metropolitan AME Church. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She is survived by two sons, Charles F. Pope, Wichita, Kan., and Donald B. Pope and wife, Margo, Littleton, Colo; a daughter, Carol L. Spriggs and husband, Ralph, Cumberland; and 13 grandchildren, Portia Speese, Minneapolis, Minn., Charles Pope, Wichita, Kevin Keyes, Virginia Beach, Va., Kendell Keyes, Dallas, Texas, Kelly Keyes, Dallas, Kirk Keyes, Dallas, Michele Moses, Reston, Va., Christopher Pope, Landover, David Spriggs, Cumberland, Julie Holman, Cumberland, Roman Spriggs, Cumberland, Cara Thornton, Cumberland, Marlon Pope, Pittsburgh, Pa.; 12 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
