John “June” Lewis Stephens Jr., 85, of Cumberland, passed away Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born May 25, 1924, in Cumberland, Mr. Stephens was the son of the late John Lewis Winfield Stephens Sr., and Hilda Marie (Jones) Stephens. He was also preceded in death by his son, Michael Stephens.

A United States Naval veteran of World War II, John retired from the Kelly-Springfield Tire and Rubber Company. He was a member of the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church; the Fulton Myers Post 153 American Legion; and cofounder of the Fulton Myers Post 153 Drum and Bugle Corps.

John is survived by his daughter, Roxanne E. Pope, of Alexandria, Va.; his brother, Donald Stephens, of Toledo, Ohio; his sisters, Delores Trimble and her husband Russell, of Cumberland, Georgia Martin, of Somerset, Pa., and Juanita Smith, of Toledo, Ohio; as well as ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted in the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Alfred Deas Jr. officiating.

Military honors will be accorded at the church by the Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
