Kate Smith Brodie – Oakland Town Council
On March 11, 2019 a total of 149 votes were cast to select three members of the Oakland, Maryland (Garrett County) Town Council. There were five candidates. Kate Smith Brodie finished third, and as confirmed by a recount, only two votes (72 to 70) ahead of the fourth place candidate. As a result Brodie became the first African-American woman elected to the Oakland Town Council. In an earlier press release Brodie noted she has been trained and has a background in advocacy and lobbying on all levels of government as it pertains to serving an array of concerns pertaining to rural communities. The other two council members elected, both incumbents, were Jay Moyer and Kathy Shaffer. Oakland has 1,228 registered voters. The 149 who participated represent a 12.1% turnout.
Kate Smith chose not to run for re-election and stated she will relocate from Garrett County at the end of August 2121.
