Lucy Mildred Reece, 1924-2017

The following excerpt is from an obituary that appeared in the January 10, 2017 edition of the Cumberland Times-News. As noted elsewhere on this website Lucy Reece was also a recipient of the 2016 Allegany County NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award:

Lucy Mildred Reece, 92, of Cumberland, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 7, 1924, in Rappahannock County, Va., Mrs. Reece was the daughter of the late John Rich Summers and Martha Susan (Freeman) Freeman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jasper Robert Reece; two sons, William Arthur Reece and Frederick Mark Reece; two sisters, Martha Anna Freeman and Dorothy Clanagan; a brother, Charlie Freeman Jr.; and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Lucy was a graduate of Manassas Regional High School and City College, Manhattan, N.Y. She also graduated from the Harlem School of Nursing in New York City, and retired from the Manhattan State Hospital as a charge nurse. Lucy was a member of the Promised Land Baptist Church, Washington, Va. and the Church of the New Vision, Bronx, N.Y. For the past 26 years she was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church having served on the Board of Trustees and as head usher for 25 years. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and a lifetime member of the NAACP having been recognized in 2016 with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Lucy is survived by her son, Thomas Reece, Bronx; and her daughter, Gloria Reece-Matthews and husband, Leslie, Cumberland. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Jerome T. Batchelor, Shakira M. Gibbons, and Kwanza S. Branch and husband, Mark; her great-grandchildren, Jerome R. Batchelor, Malik W.A. Batchelor, Samson A. Toliver-Lyons, Asia Batchelor, Sincere Isaac, Zoe Branch, and Gloria Isaac; and her God daughters, Trina Davis and Joanne Johnson

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, from 4 to 6 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, at 6 p.m. with Bishop Stephon Knox officiating.

A funeral service will also be held in New York. Interment will be in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, N.Y.
