Mary Jane (Younger) Beckwith, 81, of Cumberland, departed this earth on Thursday, May 13, 2004, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born March 24, 1923, in Kingwood, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter and Henrietta (Johnson) Younger. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Beckwith; one brother, Norman L. Younger Sr.; and three children, Thomas Beckwith, William Beckwith and Mary Beckwith. Mary Jane was a devoted member of Love Chapel of Kingwood, where she received her early education, later attending Morgantown High School. Her life's work was as a caregiver, which took her as far as Baltimore, until she retired. She returned to Cumberland to be near family and friends. She was a member of Fort Cumberland American Legion Unit 13 and V.F.W. 1411. Even though her physical health wouldn't allow, she still did all she could to help everyone who needed it, including her volunteer work with the Buckwheat Festival and any activities involving her beloved Love Chapel.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Beckwith and wife Mary and Clifton Beckwith; daughter-in-law, Hattie Beckwith; nine sisters, Wilma Younger, Florence Meade and husband George, Virginia Jesse and husband Wanzel, Frances Sue and Norma Younger, all of Cumberland, Angela Nicholson and husband Floyd, Hagerstown, Linda Whitehead and husband Glander, Mary Barnett and husband Donald, all of Baltimore and Deborah Moore and husband Darrell, Charlotte, N.C.; five brothers, Walter Younger, Lionel Younger, Leroy Younger and wife Sheila, William Younger and wife JoLee, all of Cumberland and Dwight Younger, Hartford, Conn.; two aunts, Mabel Jackson, Chicago, Ill. and Margaret Copney, Kingwood; ten grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
At Mrs. Beckwith's request her body was cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Darren Mency officiating.
