Mervin Eugene Pope, Sr.

CUMBERLAND — May 12, 2011

Mervin Eugene Pope Sr., 69, of Cumberland, departed this life on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 7, 1942, in Cumberland, Mr. Pope was the son of the late Joseph Roger and Louise E. Pope. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Drake M. Pope; and a sister, Mary Louise Jones.

Mervin retired from the Cumberland Housing Authority and Potomac Valley Pharmacy. In 1995, Mervin was inducted into Allegany High School Sports Hall of Fame for basketball. He was a member of the McKendree United Methodist Church.

Mervin is survived by his daughters, Tina L. Green and husband, Roger, Piedmont, W.Va. and Tara M. Pope, Cumberland, MD; his sons, Mervin E. Pope Jr. and wife, Ronnette, Moorefield, W.Va. and Michael L. Pope, Salisbury; his former wife and the mother of his children, Mary Louise Pope, Keyser, W.Va.; and his longtime companion, Molly Redman. He is also survived by his brothers, Joseph Roger Pope Jr. and wife, Tanya, Mount Holly, N.J., Dwight Pope, Anthony Pope, and Terrence Pope, all of Cumberland; his grandchildren, Tiara L. Clifford-Smith and her husband, Andy, Tai S. Pope, Andre M. Pope, Taryn E. Green, and Mervin E. Pope III; his step-granddaughter, Tamara Redman; as well as two great-grandchildren and one on the way. Also surviving Mervin is his brother-in-law, Roger W. Jones Sr.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday, May 15, 2011 from noon to 1 p.m.

A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Solomon O. Lloyd officiating.
