Romaine Elizabeth Franklin, 99, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, May 30, 2016, at the WMHS Frostburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Jan. 22, 1917, in Cumberland, Mrs. Franklin was the daughter of the late Charles Leo Denson and Gottie Violet (Gilmore) Denson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Hubert Franklin Sr.
A graduate of the Frederick Street School and the Bowie Normal School, where she received her degree in education, Romaine was a retired social worker for Allegany County Human Resource Development Commission and a former employee of Rosenbaum's Department Store.
Romaine was a member of the Holy Cross Saint Philips Episcopal Church, where she was a member of the Steward Group and past member of the Vestry. She was also a very active member of the NAACP. Romaine started the first African-American Girl Scout Troop in Cumberland.
Romaine is survived by her son, George H. "Bump" Franklin Jr., Cumberland; her sister, Odessa Lee, Lexington, Va.; as well as, numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, (www.AdamsFamilyFuneralHome.com) on Friday, June 3, 2016, from noon to 2 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, June 3, 2016, at 2 p.m. with Father Rowland Bonadie officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.
