Notes

The tax records from 1872 show a number of African American owning real estate property and personal property and therefore owing taxes. Tax records show some of the wealth distribution in the county and also where the African Americans lived. The value of real estate owned is in the first column of numbers, personal property in the second and the final column is tax owed.

The data above was compared to the 1870 census. For Cumberland, Phillip Hammond was listed as a 53 year old mulatto barber. William Cornish who lived on the same street was also a barber, as were Samuel Cooper and Thomas Martin. Robert Lee was listed as a laborer. Emanuel Marshall was shown as an ostler at John May’s hotel in Cumberland. Eli Robinson was a waiter. Peter Trimble was a wagoner. James Tibbs was 70, with real estate valued at $1000 in the 1870 census.

William Roderick/Redrick of Frostburg was a laborer. George Mail, James Harris of Flintstone in Garrett County and James Dorsey were also listed as a farmer.

The others named above were not found in the 1870 census. They may have moved into the area after the census was taken or they may have been missed during the census. It is also possible the tax listings are incorrect. For example there is a John B. Davis listed in the 1870 census in the Oakland area of Garrett county owning land, but he is listed there as white.
