Walter Clementine Crawford II, 1914 - 1968
In the 1940s the Wilson Hardware Company of Cumberland, a local supplier and outfitter of sports equipment for local school teams, held a display show for 27 area coaches. Carver High School coach Walter C. Crawford II, depicted in the center, attended the exhibition.
Walter Clementine Crawford, II was born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1914. He graduated from Allen University in South Carolina in 1936. He went on to serve as a U.S. Army Corporal in a medical detachment during World War II. Walter had a teaching career spanning over 25 years. This included Carver High School where he taught math, science, and coached basketball and football.
He later taught life science and math at Penn Avenue School, as well as Washington Junior High School where he also taught life science, and at Fort Hill High School where he tutored classes over the summer. He is one of several Carver teachers, such as Charles Watermann and Ruth Franklin, who are still fondly remembered by their former students.
Note: A historic black college, Allen University was founded in 1870 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church. It was originally located in Cokesbury, South Carolina but relocated to its present home in Columbia, South Carolina in 1880. It was then renamed Allen University in recognition of Richard Allen (1760-1831), the 1816 founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
