William "Rock" Evans - 2013 "Terp Award" Recipient

On May 7, 2013 University of Maryland coaches, teams and athletes were honored at the second annual Terp Awards. Co-sponsored by the Terrapin Club and the 'M' Club, student-athletes were recognized for their prowess in academics, community service and athletics. Among the notable hosts of the event was former basketball star Juan Dixon. William Evans was recognized that evening as the first recipient of the Maryland Spirit Award. Terrapin tradition

William “Rock” Evans of Cumberland carries the Maryland state flag onto the field at College Park as a four-year member and second-year captain of the University of Maryland Terrapin Cheerleaders. In the spring of 2013, he was the first recipient of the Terp Award for his outstanding athletic and leadership skills as a Terrapin cheerleader. The squad supports the football team and men’s and women’s basketball teams, at both home and away games. Evans is the third family member who has been a Maryland cheerleader. His mother, Sonya Cooper Lathrop, was on the squad from 1974-1976; his cousin John Cooper V was on the squad in 2005-2006. Evans is a 2010 graduate of Fort Hill and was a three-year member of the Sentinel Cheer Squad and local East-West Rockets Competition Cheer Team. He is a senior and will graduate in May with a degree in marine biology. Evans is the grandson of Jo-Jacqueline Cooper and the late John Cooper III.
