George M. Wyckoff Jr. (1928-2003) served as Mayor of Cumberland from 1982-1990, having been re-elected in 1984, 1986, and 1988. As seen here from a May 1982 ad in the Cumberland News during his first campaign, Wyckoff’s slogan was “Let’s Change Cumberland’s Image Together.” Wyckoff garnered 3,839 votes in the 1982 election to Wallace G. Ullery’s total of 1,811 votes. Wyckoff’s campaign Treasurer was George C. Stein.

Everette F. Hamilton ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Cumberland City Council in May 1982. Hamilton felt that working with people is the key to improving Cumberland, and that a change was needed at City Hall. As noted in this May 1982 campaign advertisement from the Cumberland News, Hamilton’s Treasurer was G. Douglas Reinhard.

Ernest C. Kessell (1932-2016) was elected to and served on the Cumberland City Council from 1970-1974, and again from 1978-1982. The Cumberland News advertisement on this page is from May 1982. In it, Kessell pledged “continued responsible government” and asked that the citizens vote for a “responsible leader with 8 years experience.” Kessell was not re-elected. Chris Lockard served as his campaign Treasurer.
