Michael A. Llewelleyn was appointed by Governor O'Malley on September 28, 2009 to fill the vacancy left by the passing of Jane M. Dawson. He was a candidate in the 2010 election for a seat on the non-partisan Board of Education and elected to that position in the November 2, 2010 General Election. Llewelleyn chose not to run for re-election in 2014.

Edward Root served as a teacher in the Allegany County Public Schools and as a professor, Chair, and Dean of the School of Education at Frostburg State University. He also served eight years, four as President, of the Maryland State Board of Education. Root was elected to the Board of Education in the November 2010 General Election. Root was re-elected to a four-year term of office in the November 6, 2012 General Election. On November 3, 2020 Edward Root was defeated in his re-election bid to the Allegany County Board of Education.

Sara-Beth James was appointed by Governor Martin O'Malley on February 18, 2010 to fill the vacancy on the Allegany County Board of Education left by the passing of C. Fred Sloan. She was a candidate in the 2010 election for a seat on the Board of Education and was the top vote-getter in the November 2010 General Election. Sara-Beth James was re-elected to an additional four-year term in 2014. In 2017 Sara-Beth Bittinger (formerly James) announced she would not be seeking re-election in 2018.

Laurie Peskin Marchini is one of six candidates running for the four opens seats on the six-member non-partisan Allegany County Board of Education. Increased learning opportunities and a more varied curriculum for the students were among her top priorities. Marchini was elected to the Board of Education in the November 2010 General Election. Laurie Peskin Marchini was re-elected to an additional four-year term in 2014. In 2017 Laurie Marchini announced she would not be seeking re-election in 2018.

Kimi-Scott McGreevy was a candidate for the Allegany County Board of Education in 2004. With the motto, "McGreevy for Excellence in Education", she was among the top four candidates in a primary which saw nine contestants, thereby enabling her to move onto the General Election. Although McGreevy garnered 11,529 votes she finished third, with the two open seats being won by Jeffrey Metz and C. Fred Sloan.
