Seven women have served on the City Council of Cumberland. These include Lucile Roeder (1950-1952, 1952-1954, 1958-1962, 1962-1966), Josephine Edwards (appointed 1958), Dellann Campbell (appointed 1986, elected 1988-1992), and Ursula Ann Franklin (1988-2000).

In September 2007 Mary Beth Pirolozzi was appointed to fill a vacancy on the city council. She was formally elected to the city council in November 2008. Pirolozzi chose not to run for city council re-election in 2012. In August 2017 Mary Beth Pirolozzi was appointed by the Allegany County Orphans Court to fill the vacant position of Register of Wills.

In the General Election of November 6, 2012, Nicole Alt-Myers was elected to a four-year term on the Cumberland City Council. She is to be sworn in on January 7, 2013. In 2016 Nicole Alt-Myers announced she would not be seeking re-election to the Cumberland City Council.

Laurie Marchini declined to run for re-election to the Allegany County Board of Education in 2018. In January 2019 she was appointed to fill vacancy on the City Council of Cumberland, Maryland for a term through 2021. On November 3, 2020 Laurie Marchini was elected to a full-term to serve on the Cumberland City Council.
