On May 9, 2023 Emily Newman-Edwards became the first woman in history to be elected mayor of the Town of Grantsville, Maryland. Located in Garrett County, Grantsville was incorporated in 1864. The 2020 census shows Grantsville with a population of 968 people. Newman-Edwards had currently been serving her second term on the Grantsville Town Council.

Newman-Edwards is a past president of the Greater Grantsville Business Association, a former board member of the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival and in 2021 honored by the Daily Record as one of Maryland’s “Leading Women,” an award honoring women forty years of age or younger for the accomplishments made thus far in their careers. She is employed as the Director of Operations for the Fronterra Group and oversees the Savage River Lodge and Cornucopia Café in Grantsville.
