Juanita Nightingale

Juanita M. Nightingale (1935-2016)

Juanita Nightingale was extremely active in nursing programs at local hospitals, public schools and at the health department. The following excerpts are from her obituary as it appeared on the April 3, 2016 edition of the Cumberland Times-News:

“Juanita Margaret Nightingale died Friday, April 1, 2016, at The Kensington surrounded by her husband and sons.

Born June 30, 1935, in Frostburg, to the late Richard H. McClintock Sr. and E. Marie (Hill) McClintock, she was the second of three children, Richard H. McClintock Jr. (deceased) and Sharon Richardson of Lewes, Del. She was married to Norman W. Nightingale and was planning to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary this month.

Juanita graduated from Beall High School in 1953. In 1956, she received her nursing diploma from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. In 1973, she received her pediatric nurse practitioner degree from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Between 1956 and 1962, Mrs. Nightingale worked as a clinical instructor at Memorial Hospital; and, from 1962 continuing until 1969 as a staff nurse there. She began working at the Allegany County Health Department in 1969 as a staff nurse and in 1975 began functioning as a nurse practitioner in many of the clinics. Juanita retired from the Health Department in 1996.

In addition to her clinic responsibilities at the Health Department, Mrs. Nightingale was a consultant and visiting nurse to many local elementary schools and to the Head Start and Child Development programs in Allegany County. She also served on the board of directors at New Hope, Inc., Allegany County Public School Council, the Council for Children and Youth, and the Head Start Advisory Council. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in LaVale, the Memorial Hospital Alumnae Association and a past member of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners.

At graduation from nursing school, Mrs. Nightingale was the recipient of the Medical-Surgical Award for Excellence in Bedside Nursing and the Pediatric Award for Proficiency in the care of children. In 1979, she received the Peer Recognition Award for service to the citizens of Allegany County. She was honored in 1980 as the Maryland Public Health Association’s first recipient of the Ruth B. Freeman Award for outstanding direct patient care in the community health nursing field.”
