Mary Miltenberger

Mary Miltenberger is a local businesswoman and community activist. An early advocate for historic preservation, Mary has for over three decades been a leader in the debate over such other public policy issues as education, highway locations, fluoridation, prisons, flood mitigation, Pro-Life, father's rights and the placement of the Ten Commandments.

She also served as Allegany County’s first Head Start Program Director and, along with Hazel Groves Hansrote, co-edited the Heritage Press, a publication of the Preservation Society of Allegany County.

Mary Miltenberger candidate for mayor of Cumberland

Longtime political activist Mary C. Miltenberger has announced that she has filed to run for the office of Mayor of Cumberland.

Citing the need for experienced leadership as well as a vision to move Cumberland forward, Mrs. Miltenberger brings a great variety of experience to her campaign. Mary was the first Head Start Daycare Center director, developing one center with 12 children into five centers with 225 children.

The fight to save the B&O Queen City Station was led by Mrs. Miltenberger, and she served on the first C&O Canal Historic Park Commission. Mary's late husband, Dr. F. W. Miltenberger, had great affection for the city and people of Cumberland, as he and Mary raised seven children in the area.

In addition to renovating condemned properties on North Centre Street, she developed successful businesses, featuring a dress shop, a successful bed and breakfast and wellness center.

The list of Mary's community activities is long and includes serving on the mayor and City Council's Advisory Committee, a Cumberland Housing Authority member, Allegany County Transit Authority member, twice elected to the County/State Central Committee, chairman of the Allegany County Committee of the Maryland Historical Trust, president of the Preservation Society, which put the Washington Street Historical District and Baltimore Street Historical District on the National Register of Historic Places. Many historic buildings saved in Oldtown, Mount Savage and Lonaconing were through the efforts of the society and Mrs. Miltenberger's guidance and leadership.

Mary became known for frequent participation in county and city meetings as she spoke out on public issues.

Mary Miltenberger holds a bachelor of science in education from the University of Alaska, a master of science in counseling psychology from Frostburg State University and is a wellness consultant at Angel's Way Wellness Center.
