Mary Susan (Sue) Cerutti

Born in Frostburg and a graduate of Beall High School, Sue Cerutti would go on to become a leading Cumberland businesswoman, preservationist, and community activist. She was also an outstanding public servant.

Beginning in 1979 Sue served for twelve years in various capacities with the Allegany County Human Resources Development Commission. These included such positions as Community Services Administrator, Director of Community Affairs, and Director of the Allegany County Area Agency on Aging. She also served with the Cumberland Neighborhood Housing Service.

The establishment of the North Centre Street Playground in about 1997 can in large part be attributed to her efforts. In 1998 she accepted the position of co-manager, along with Ed Mullaney, of the Downtown Cumberland Mall. Sue held this position until her passing. Much of downtown Cumberland's redevelopment and economic revitalization over the past nine years in terms of new business and job creation can be directly attributed to her efforts.

In addition, Sue also partnered with her husband, Richard, in the purchase and historic renovation of numerous homes in the city's adjacent residential areas thus promoting the preservation of the city's historic character. Among her many honors is being recognized in 2001 as the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce Individual of the year.
