Nelliemae B. Redhead
Nelliemae Redhead was a candidate for Cumberland City Council in 1982. She finished eighth in a field of thirteen candidates in the May 4th, 1982 primary with 1,347 votes, thereby qualifying for the general election. Nelliemae secured a respectable 1,644 votes in the May 18th balloting. Unfortunately this was not enough to place her among the top four winners.
As noted in a newspaper article from the Cumberland News dated, May 5, 1982, Mrs. Redhead resided at 601 East First Street, was a life-long resident of South Cumberland, and a graduate of Fort Hill High School. Nelliemae served as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital and was also a charter member of the Allegany County Commission on Problems of the Aging. The article went on further to note that Mrs. Redhead was associated with Best Toyota, 219 North Mechanic Street, and was an organist, trustee, and teacher of the adult Bible Class at the Christ United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association.
Nelliemae B. Redhead's campaign slogan was, "Bring Cumberland Back to Life." In a Cumberland News article dated April 29, 1982 she states that the most important task for her as a member of the Cumberland City Council would be to be a good listener. She noted no one person can solve the problems facing the city, but "with harmony and integrity among ourselves we can do something."
