Priscilla Ellen (Beall) McKaig, 1809 - 1885
Priscilla was a genteel and aristocratic lady, and with two of her four sons serving as Confederate officers, had strong sympathies with the South during the Civil War (1861-1865). Priscilla was a granddaughter of Thomas Beall of Samuel (1744-1823), the founder of Cumberland.
The McKaig Journal was a joint effort of William and Priscilla McKaig from 1851 to 1862 when Priscilla became the sole diarist. It records the social, economic, religious, and political life of a well-to-do family of Cumberland, Maryland. William McKaig was a lawyer, state legislator, and president of the Frostburg Coal Company.
The diary formed the basis of a local publication entitled, The McKaig Journal-A Confederate Family of Cumberland, Allegany County Historical Society, Gateway Press Inc., 1984.
