Rebeca Arthur

Rebeca Arthur was born in Cumberland and graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1978. Rebeca went on to star in the ABC television comedy, “Perfect Strangers” from 1986 to 1993. She has also appeared in numerous other television shows and movies since that time including, “Get Shorty” and “The Watcher”.

The following is excerpted from an article that appeared in the October 28, 2016 edition of the Cumberland Times-News. It provides an update on the actress:

City native, actress Rebeca Arthur Golden thankful for upbringing

CUMBERLAND — She was the “it” girl for 1980s and 1990s television comedy. She appeared for nine years as Balki’s girlfriend on the widely popular ABC-TV comedy “Perfect Strangers.” And she’s a graduate of Fort Hill High School.
Rebeca Arthur Golden appears on the cover of the November issue of Allegany Magazine — available early next week.
“I used to return to Cumberland every Christmas to spend it with my mother and brother, but now that my mom’s gone, I don’t get back often,” Golden, now 56, tells the magazine in an exclusive interview from her home in Calabasas, California.

“When my mom passed away four years ago, my youngest daughter wanted to see my high school. It was on a weekend and the school was closed, but there were people using the gym. So we snuck into the school through the gym and boy … was it different. We figured out how to get into the main part of the school and I showed her the auditorium. She was a huge ‘Glee’ fan at the time and was so impressed that my high school looked just like the one on ‘Glee,’ with lockers lining the halls and a cafeteria.”
The article for Allegany Magazine was written by a former classmate, Ellen McDaniel-Weissler.

“She was part of the ‘in’ crowd, pretty and funny, smart and talented, a cheerleader and gymnast — but down-to-earth friendly,” said McDaniel-Weissler, who attended school and even performed in some theatrical productions with Golden. “She radiated charisma and flair and always seemed surrounded by starlight — and when Becky Arthur, now Rebeca Arthur Golden, left Cumberland after high school, one of those stars fell into her pathway.”

McDaniel-Weissler said she still has a hand mirror Golden gave her from a high school student trip to Paris.
Allegany Magazine’s Managing Editor Shane Riggs said the inclusion of Golden as a cover story for the magazine was one that has been requested for some time.

“I really can’t tell you how many people have come up to me and said it was time to feature Rebeca Arthur. So many people said to me — you’ve had William H. Macy and Eddie Deezen on your covers, you need to do a story on Becky.”

Golden was even cooperative with the story itself.
“She sent us photos from the TV show and from her personal collection of her family,” Riggs said. “And when I had to email her for some follow up questions, I mentioned it would be great if we could have a Thanksgiving photo of her to use for the November issue. She wrote back and said — ‘What do you need? I will have it to you by Friday.’ And one of the photos she sent — taken by her brother in law — was picked for the cover.”

In one of the emails to Riggs, she wrote: “I wish I could see the look on the faces of people I went to school with if I make the cover of Allegany Magazine. A Fort Hill graduate on the cover of Allegany during the month of Homecoming. How scandalous!”
