2nd MD P.H.B., July 1864

The 2nd MD P.H.B. reached here last week on their return from the severe campaign under Gen. Hunter, through the Shenandoah valley. Their appearance gave proof to the statewide of the men that they had seen real service, and endured their full share of privations arid hardships. Dr. P.S. Smith, Surgeon of the Regiment, has furnished the following list of killed and wounded, during the campaign:

Killed – Samuel Miller, veteran, Co. D; S. Wilson, company not recollected; Martin Dunkee, Co. E. killed by the accidental discharge of his own gun.

Wounded. At Gallipolis Hospital, Ohio, doing Well:—Corporal Richard Browning, Co I, flesh wound in right leg; Wm. L. Frantz, Co. I flesh wound in leg; Orderly Sergt G.W. Davis, Co H, lost right eye and injury to his nose; John Reynolds, flesh wound in thigh. Left in the hospital on the battlefield and fell into the hands of the enemy—Daniel Rhes, Co. E, injury to knee joint by shell, leg amputated; Wm. Metz, severe, lacerations over sacrum;. Frederick Zink, Co. D, cavity of chest R. H. Sprigg, Co. D. right side; John Hay. Co. I, left foot and ankle, ball in ankle; John Garlitz, Co. I, wounded in both thighs, left thigh broken; Jas Johnson, Co. A, wounded in thigh, high up; Robert Furlough, thigh, lower part; these were very serious wounds that did not admit to parties being brought off; no doubt some of the cases wounded will terminate fatally.

Philip Knee, Co. H, was wounded in the hand. Several others were slightly wounded but returned with the regiment.
