The attached PDF is the register of Canal Boats from 1873-1876 in boat order. The majority of owners listed their residence as Washington County (221), and 156 listed Allegany County as their residence.
By 1873 coal company boats made up a quarter of the total number of craft. The American Coal Company was the owner of 78 boats. Consolidated Coal Company registered 55.
Maryland Free Stone Company of Seneca, Maryland, also had 9 boats, all Class D.
The attached PDF was transcribed from the original, located at the National Archives, College Park, Maryland in National Park Service (NPS) files, Record group 79. All the original material was handwritten in a flowing script font of the day. That means it was occasionally hard to decipher.
