Land assigned to veterans and settlers (- all, in name order)

Military lots assigned to Maryland soldiers, 1778 and lots already occupied by settlers. Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

Names of all soldiers assigned lots west of Fort Cumberland, in payment for services during the Revolutionary War. Not all the lot numbers were found on the various maps. Also this list includes the settlers who were already on the land when the surveying party went through.

The list of settlers here includes only those found west of Cumberland, so it does not include all of the early arrivals in western Maryland. For example the Cresap family was established south of Cumberland prior to 1787, but only some of the Cresap lands are listed. The lots of Daniel Cresap Sr. and his sons Daniel Jr., Robert and James, are shown west of Cumberland, and close together. The lot 3567 owned by Joseph, Daniel Sr's brother, and the man who gave his name to Cresaptown, does not adjoin the other Cresap lot numbers, but is further north.

... Karen Cresap, Cresap Society Archivist

Lots that were not already settled or assigned to veterans are not included on this listing.
