Nathaniel Rochester was the first president of the Hagerstown Bank in 1808. James Dixon Roman, a former COngressman, was president from 1851 to 1867.

The bank was one of those that provided money to pay the ransom demanded by Brigadier-General John McCausland. He was sent by Confederate General Jubal Early into Hagerstown to levy a ransom and a large amount of clothing, in retribution for Federal destruction of farms, feed and cattle in the Shenandoah Valley. The Hagerstown Bank was later repaid for their contribution.
