Hagerstown, Braly and Ulrick Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

On the reverse of the photograph: Braly and Ulrick.

These two men owned a tobacco store on West Washington Street. Their advertisement in the Herald of Freedom and Torch Light in September 1862 reads: BRALY & ULRICK have just returned from Baltimore with a splendid stock of TOBACCO AND CIGARS, and take this method of informing their friends and the public generally that their stock of TOBACCO and CIGARS is the best and largest ever offered to the citizens of Washington County.

Notes:
This photograph was included in the publication Washington County during the Civil War. This would make it one of oldest photographs taken in the county. Chester Hays, a collector of old photographs, may have been responsible for its preservation.

The object on the pedestal in front of the store is possibly a cigar store Indian. Some of the earlier carvings had more African features than Native American (Fried, 1970).
