Director Bruce Etchison and assistant director Mary Harter hanging the "Famous Americans" exhibition Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

Director Bruce Etchison and assistant director Mary Harter are shown hanging the "Famous Americans" exhibition, which included works by Gilbert Stuart.

Bruce Etchison and Mary Harter were two of the Museum's most influential employees. Mary worked at the Museum from the time it opened until she retired in 1956. She began the Saturday children's story hour and other free children's activities that are still an important part of the Museum's educational program. Bruce became the Museum’s director in 1950. During his tenure he developed important relationships within the art world, leading to many additions to the Museum's collection. Under Bruce’s directorship, the Museum saw significant growth of its Old Masters collection and its American art collection. He was also a strong supporter of the Museum's educational programming and worked to strengthen the Museum's relationship with the Board of Education and the City and County governments. He left the Museum in 1964 to work for the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection (Williamsburg) and then go on to begin his own conservation studio. He returned for a year as WCMFA’s Administrator when the museum was without a director between in 1966 and 1967 and later held a position on the Museum’s Board of Trustees.
