School in Zion Church basement

Accident, Maryland: Schools. Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

The four-year high school was established in Accident during the 1922-1923 school year with an enrollment of fifty-five students, seven in the senior class. Rooms were bulging at the seams.
Overcrowded conditions prompted the Board of Education to rent the basement room from Zion Lutheran Church for the first through third grades. The Board paid fifteen dollars a month and furnished the fuel as well as other necessary school materials.

Dora Schlossnagel was the teacher. She is shown here with Mrs. Strauss' sister, Helen Ault (standing at Dora's front right), who was then a second or third grader. "Miss Dora" was apparently content to do her teaching in the basement and was considered an excellent teacher.
