Accident, Maryland: High School. Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

Old Accident School(Yellow Brick).

Lots eight and nine in south Accident, fronting on Main Street, were sold by Truman West (trustee for Rebecca Spangler) to the Public School Commissioners of Allegany County, MD. The lots contained one-fourth acre each. In 1868, George Menhorn sold the commissioners lot ten, also fronting on Main Street.
Two frame buildings occupied these lots before erection of the yellow brick school building was begun in 1914. Mr. F.G. Fox was awarded the contract to erect a four-room, two floor, brick school for $3,630. The building committee was composed of Fred Burkhart, Adam Richter, and Jonas Speicher. This group approved the work and paid the bills.

When the school opened in 1915, there were classes through the ninth grade with three teachers (including the principal). By 1920 Accident School became a second group high school offering three years of secondary work. A minimum of twenty-five pupils, two full time teachers and a principal, and twelve units for graduation and regular attendance were required.
