Fourth of July, Accident

FOURTH OF JULY. This national holiday has always been very special for Accident. A Fourth of July parade is forming in this picture (taken prior to 1910). Note that buggies still outnumbered automobiles. The first building on the left is the present Matthew's Store.

The early history of celebrating the holiday involved many picnics sponsored by the churches (Lutheran). Some were held in the Shartzer Grove in north Accident, but most were held in the Speicher Grove which later became the Spoerlein Grove.

When the Fire Department was formed in 1946, sponsorship of the annual picnic became a special project for the fireman. Beginning in 1947, the picnics were held in Spoerlein's Grove. The 1979 picnic had to move from the grove to the Fire Hall due to heavy rain. The next year (1980) the picnic was scheduled for the hall and they have continued to be held there. In 1989, the ACHS joined the firemen in planning a Homecoming celebration for the Fourth of July and a new tradition was begun
