My father Claude D. McIntyre was mine foreman at Wolf Den Coal Co, Shallmar, Maryland.

The coal company produced their own electric which was 250 DC watts. The power house had two engines, a skinner engine and a standby. This also provided the mine with electric and picking table where the coal was cleaned. My brother Albert worked on the picking table for $1.44 for a 10 hour day. It took him at least two hours arriving home to get himself cleaned up.

I being younger would go to the mine and with my father we would go into the mine and measure yardage of slate which the miners handled for nothing. Yet if the loaded a car of coal with just too much slate they were clocked and given two days off without pay.

One time my father and I were going up a heading when we walked into black damp, no oxygen. My father fell forward. I had presence of mind to pull him back out were the air was ok. A lot of the place in the mine was machine cut, the rest was pick work, using black powder to jar (?) the coal loose from the face. The miners at the time used carbide lights.

They had a check board on the outside. Each miner was given a number and two brass checks. When inside he took one check off the board, this showed he was inside. In the evening the board was watched closely to make sure everyone was back out of the mine. On several times a couple of checks were missing. So a party went in to find the problem. Sometimes the men were killed by a roof fall, sometimes a broken leg or injury.
