support being assured, a room was secured on the main street pleasantly furnished, and well stocked with periodicals and newspapers. The nucleus of a library formerly loaned to the village club by Major Pierce was given to the association by his widow. The room is open to the public from nine in the morning until nine in the evening and is in charge of Miss Carrie Cleland. The success of this movement on the part of the Boonsboro people has been all that could be desired. To this reading room as the most suitable place the books of the Boonsboro branch were transferred. A sufficient number was sent them at the time of opening to insure a good collection always on hand, and twice or three times a month fresh deliveries have been made with the return of such, as in the judgment of the librarian in charge could best be spared. It is obvious that the advantage of such a plan as this to the reading public of Boonsboro has been precisely the same as if they had had a bi-monthly or weekly instalment of new books added to a permanent collection.

Our records show that 1696 books have been circulated in Boonsboro through the year. This does not include any record of books used at the reading room. Too much credit cannot be given to the Boonsboro people, the pioneers in this plan of permanent branches throughout the county.

It is understood that a movement of the same kind is being considered in Hancock and it is hoped that gradually similar reading rooms may be maintained at least in each of the incorporated villages in the county.
