President Taft at Mountain Lake Park

Mountain Lake Park, Maryland: President Taft at Mountain Lake Park Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

One of the greatest days in the Park happened to occur in 1911 when over seven thousand people came to see President William Howard Taft. The White House may have its story about President Taft getting stuck in a bathtub... but here in Mountain Lake Park, we have our automobile story. At six foot two, and weighing 332 pounds, he was a very big man. After his lecture, the President wanted to tour the Park in a car. When it was discovered that it was too small for him, a larger car was quickly commandeered and a seat removed so that he could have his drive.
