Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. (1961- )

On November 4, 2008, Illinois Senator Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. became the first African-American to be elected President of the United States of America. On November 6, 2012, President Obama defeated Mitt Romney and was re-elected to a second four-year term.

Barack Obama's father was from Kenya, and his mother from Kansas. Obama received his law degree from Harvard in 1991 and is the first African-American to serve as president of the Harvard Law Review. He worked in Chicago as a community organizer and civil rights lawyer and has also lectured on Constitutional Law. He was elected to the Illinois State Senate serving from 1997 to 2004, until his election to the United States Senate. He is the first African-American Presidential candidate in history from a major American political party.

Obama's Vice-presidential running-mate was Delaware Senator Joseph R. Biden (1942- ). Biden was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972, and had also unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for President in 1988 and 2008.

Among the Obama buttons featured here is one with Oprah Winfrey (1954- ), who in 2007 endorsed Obama's run for the Democratic nomination. Another button features Obama with his wife, Michelle (1964- ).

The "Obama Pride" button is from a national organization of the same name. Their goal is to develop a national network of LGBT (Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender) Obama supporters who will work toward Obama's election as President. The small "Obama 08" button was distributed by MoveOn.org, a liberal non-profit political action organization originally founded in 1998 to oppose the impeachment of President Clinton.

The Amalgamated Transportation Union (ATU) is the largest transit union in the nation and has over 160,000 members in 270 locals in 46 states. The National Education Association (NEA) has also gone on record as supporting the candidacy of Barack Obama for President. Their "Education Votes" button is also depicted on this page. In addition, a Communication Workers of America (CWA) button endorsing Obama and the "road to change" is also portrayed.
