Land patents of Washington County, Maryland (1730-1830)

patents by year Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

This graph, researched and created by Paul McDermott, shows the land patents of Washington County granted by year. It depicts the years when the largest number of grants were patented, 1760-1764, and years when there was little activity, like 1775-1779. Peaks were reached at the conclusion of the Seven Years War and again after the Revolutionary War. By 1830, there was relative stability, as there was not much new land to claim relative to what had been patented earlier.

McDermott noted that the population of the county leveled off after 1800. In one decade county population increased by only 80 people. This may have been due to a movement from the county to Ohio and the midwest.
