TOURISTS LIKE CAMPING PRIVILEGES

The Cumberland Chamber of Commerce has received letters from many tourists from various parts of the country complimenting that body on the camping privileges they have received at Auto Park, Baltimore Turnpike, five miles east of this city, free of charge. Since July 24, when the Chamber of Commerce started its free parking plan, 218 automobile parties have stopped at Auto Park, making a daily average of ten parties.

Although a local hotel proprietor objected to the Chamber of Commerce free parking plan, stating that it kept business away from the hotels, garages, stores, and shops in this city, it was pointed out by Secretary Ankeney that the tourists do not usually stop at hotels, and are always equipped for camping out and that their stopping at the park is an advertisement and a boost for Cumberland, such as it has proven by the free camping plan offered by other cities. It was added that the hotels and garages here are doing a flourishing business and that the park therefore has no affect on those places.
