Library Construction Fund Established

The La Vale Library Committee presented a check to the Allegany County Library Board for $11,582.42 last month. Seated from left are Mrs. Ralph C. Isiminger, board trustee; Karl R. Feise, board trustee; Okey E. Michael, secretary; and James Alfred Avirett, treasurer of the board. Standing from left are Robert L. Neal, director of the Allegany County Library System; Dr. Adam D. Baer, board president; Jimmie D. Flanagan, chairman of the LaVale Library Committee; Mrs. James Warden, member of the LaVale Library Committee and of the LaVale Century Club, sponsor of the present library; and Mrs. Robert Loffert, co-chairman of the LaVale Library Committee.

The LaVale Library Construction Fund has been officially established by the Allegany County Library Board. The board added $5,417.58 to the $11,582.42 raised by the Library Committee, creating a total of $17,000.00 which was the local goal for the fiscal year 1971-72 toward the construction of a new branch library in LaVale.

Mr. Robert S. Neal, director of the Allegany County Library System announced that the $17,000 fund will enable the county to receive $24,200 in matching funds from the State of Maryland. He emphasized that this amount will be a separate fund deposited with the Allegany County Commissioners and that an additional $13,000 must be raised to total $30,000 which is needed before construction may begin on the branch library.

Jimmie D. Flanagan, chairman of the Library Committee, stated that the Library Committee has been attempting to raise the county's share which is $30,000 before construction can begin. He said the county's share is actually $70,000, but the land is worth $40,000 that has been donated for the new library. He pointed out that the Allegany County Commissioners have in the past not provided any funding for the library project. Mr. Flanagan said in view of the present fund total and matching funds being contributed for the new library, he hoped the present Allegany County Commissioners would consider funding of the project since it is a service of the county government.

Construction could start when the Construction Fund account reaches $30,000, which is in addition to the $24,200.00 to be received from the State as matching funds.
