It costs less to circulate a book from a public library in Allegany County than in any other Maryland county, according to statistics from the Maryland State Department of Education.

According to the state report, the cost of circulating a book in Allegany County was nearly 2 ½ times less than the state average.

The statistics also show that Allegany County public libraries rank sixth in circulation per capita, surpassed only by those in the more densely populated metropolitan counties. The local library system, did, however, circulate more books per capita than Baltimore City and Prince George's County.

The two primary reasons for the success of the public libraries in Allegany County, according to Robert L. Neal, director of the system, is community support and a dedicated staff. He adds that is why 578,675 books were circulated last year.
