Teacher's Will Benefits Library

Miss Helen M. Allee, a retired teacher who died last year at the age of 84, is still contributing to the education of young people and adults under the terms of her will.

Miss Allee, who resided on Frederick Street, died February 18, 1976.

James Alfred Avirett, chairman of the Allegany County Library Board of Trustees, said that under the terms of Miss Allee's will the bulk of her estate was to be left to the library to be used for the purchase of books. Half of the books are to be children's books and the other 50 per cent books of general interest.

Miss Allee really left the $22,188.89 to. the Cumberland Free Public Library, which was the name of the local library before the countywide system came into being in 1960.

Her teaching career really began at the age of 14, when her mother set up a school in the upstairs of their home on Maryland Avenue. Obviously, she was too young to teach in the public schools at that time.

Her first teaching assignment in the county school system was at a country school on Williams Road. She had to board with the parents of her pupils during the week and returned home only on weekends. She had to walk from the top of Irons Mountain to Maryland Avenue on Friday evenings, returning to her boarding place on Sunday night. She walked both ways.

Eventually, she obtained teaching assignments at elementary schools in Cumberland, where she taught all subjects. Her schools included Columbia Street, Virginia Avenue, Gephart, Johnson Heights and John Humbird. She retired on April 1, 1953 after 51 years as a teacher.

Miss Allee was a life member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and a member of the Retired Teachers' Association. Her will did provide a $500 cash bequest to Emmanuel Church too.
