N. Hampshire native taking over county library system
CUMBERLAND —
Jane Perlungher has been named the director of the Allegany County Library System. Ms. Perlungher replaces Robert Neal who retired after 26 years of service. She will officially begin her duties on January 1.
Ms. Perlungher comes to Cumberland from Keene, New Hampshire, where she had been the director of the Keene Public Library since 1981. Under her leadership, the library initiated and implemented a long range planning process, expanded existing services and developed new programs, acquired a significant collection of library materials through the City of Keene's Capital Improvement Program, participated in a successful community campaign to raise funds for the library, established a joint automation project with Keene State College which resulted in the installation of a fully integrated system, and assisted in the formation of the Cheshire County Literary Coalition as a result of an award of an LSCA grant.
Ms. Perlungher received her BA in Sociology from Barnard College in New York in 1968 and her M.L.S. with honors from Columbia University in 1969. She had held other library positions prior to her assignment in Keene.
She has been very active in professional and community activities. She is a member of the American Association of University Women. In 1991 she was the general chairperson of the first United Way Campaign in New England to achieve a successful finish. She was the 1992 recipient of the New Hampshire Governor's Volunteer Recognition Award for Cheshire County.
Ms. Perlungher has two sons, Thomas, a freshman at Johns Hopkins, and Rusty, a senior at the University of Vermont.
Ms. Perlungher, who now resides on Forest Drive in Cumberland, is eager to begin her duties and to serve the people of Allegany County.
