CUMBERLAND —

The Allegany County Library System is celebrating its new MySpace page called Teen Lair and is asking area teens to complete a Teen Interest Survey to help make the libraries a place teens want to visit, both in person and online.

Teens can click on "Teen's Page" in the library banner on the library's Web site at www.alleganycountylibrary.info or go directly to it at www.myspace.com/the_teen_lair.
"We know that the kids are really into social networking, like MySpace — big time," said Regina Spiker, computer instructor for the library system, who is helping develop the site. Teens visiting Teen Lair can sign up as friends, or just see who has already become friends. Just click on "View all of Teen Lair's friends."

New teen books will be added periodically, bulletins of upcoming events will be posted and photos and videos added. Music has been added to the page and podcasts may be added in the future.

When the library's Teen Advisory Board and Teen Volunteer Program get up and running, the goal is that the teens will help with the page or possibly take it over at some point. The National School Board Association's recent survey on tweens' and teens' popular social networking activities shows how students are putting their writing skills to use by posting messages, blogging, sending suggestions or ideas, submitting articles and surveying ideas. Arts and music skills are also heavily evident with downloading and uploading of music, posting of photos and in the creation of new virtual objects and characters.

Parents need to decide if MySpace is appropriate for their kids. As with any social networking site, it's good to be aware and careful. Teens are supposed to be at least 14 years old before they can have a MySpace page. When a teen creates their own page, it is always a good idea to lock their page and only let in their friends.

Teens who are interested in participating in the new Teen Volunteer Program can contact Nancy Sudine at (301) 359-0455 or nsudine@allconet.org.
